Checking In

My friend and I walked past the sauna at our gym the other day, and she teased that if I took a turn in the hot box I would "probably be tweeting from the sauna on a foggy blackberry." Because, let’s face it. I love my Blackberry way too much, just like I love tweeting way too much (I think we’ve already covered this . . .  ). So there’s a part of me that’s a little embarrassed to admit that I only JUST hopped on the Four Square wagon about a week ago. In fact, I only figured out what Four Square is a few weeks back, after asking a friend to explain it to me. Four Square, for those of you who aren’t familiar, is a smartphone app (and Web site) that allows users to "check in" at their current location, letting their friends know where they are at all times. The person who checks in the most at a certain location becomes "the mayor," and can sometimes score some cool swag. What’s the point? Um. I don’t really know what the point is. Except that I’m kind of new to the area, and I’ve learned about a few new delis and cafes by seeing where my Four Square “Friends” check in. I also read their tips about certain venues (Omg, order the garlic knots here; $3 tequila shots on Thursday nights; etc.) It's pretty neat, and not as creepy as I thought it is. The app doesn’t actually know where you are unless you choose to “check in,” and even then, if you don’t want people to know you’re there, but want to accrue more “check ins” in your quest toward mayor, you can choose not to broadcast the fact that you’re there. So it’s not some creepy tracking system that keeps track of where you are at all times. From what I’ve learned so far, it’s basically just like a specialized Twitter. So I’m in. My question is: Is this thing catching on. How many of you are on Four Square?
