The person needs to be ready. If they're not, or they haven't "got it out of their system" they might be susceptible to this kind of behavior until.....Until they have no other choice left. Lets hope it doesn't get to the point where someone gets hurt.

It took one of my uncles a long time to really get that he was hurting himself and his family, he was stopped a couple of times and once he was taken in.

I think it depends on the character and integrity of the person and whether or not they always engage in wreckless behavior or if this was merely a rare bad case of judgement.
