In my 27 years of watching basketball (to be fair I only remember 22 of them), I can never recall anything that was as crazy as the circus sideshow everyone witnessed in the previous NBA offseason. Its the only time I could remember so many big name stars were free agents all at the same time. Names like Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer, Amare Stoudemire were just a few that everybody had their eyes on, but everyone was gunning for Lebron James.
Now I don’t want to relive the entire Lebron saga all over again, we all know how that movie ends. The real story now is the epilogue to that movie. Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade and Lebron James, known around the league simply as "The Big 3" were attracting criticism from the entire sporting universe...well before the season began.
First you had the now historic and horrendously bad 'I'm taking my talents to South Beach" Lebron James interview. Not long after that Dwayne Wade was trying to control the media hype by comparing if the heat go on a losing streak that people would treat it like 9/11. Yeah, no one remembers that for some reason. Trust me, it happened, go and Google it. Then there is Chris "I used to look like I was in Avatar" Bosh, who is like the Shemp of the crew. Bosh I suppose hasn't done anything bad from a PR standpoint, he just annoys me. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wears a “I’m with Wade” T-shirt when he goes out clubbing. Yeah dude, you were the best player that was on the Toronto Raptors. Great. That’s like admiring the shiniest turd in the toilet.
Then you had the over the top introduction that would make WWE wrestlers cringe in their tights. The silly introduction, the bad music, the bad dancing, the lame interview of the 3 stooges, and the outrageous assumption that they already had the league on a string and they were going to win the title. Not just a single championship either, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7 either (their words, not mine). I’m sure everyone remembers the “What should I do” Lebron Nike commercials too (shutting up and keeping your massive ego in check would be a great start).
So the season got started…
As I expected, they just beat the living snot out of bum teams. Try and put them against a good team and the Heat fold faster than a novice gambler. Currently on the season they have gone a dismal 2-9 against the top 5 teams in the league; both of their victories coming against an aging Lakers team. There still seems to be a lot of confusion on who gets the ball in the final minutes of the game, because Lebron chokes (he left Clevland because he was tired of being the man, remember?), Bosh can’t work the inside and Wade looks like he’s out of gas.
Miami does not have to win a title this year to be called a failure, but if Miami wins nothing for the tenure that Bosh, Wade and James are signed for, it will go down as the biggest hype (and failure) in NBA history…and so far the latter seems to be in the drivers seat. Too much of a good thing, in this case, ego, can be bad afterall.
